Traditional Mexican Atole with a Touch of Chocolate

Atole is a very popular warm Mexican drink typically made with masa (corn flour), but can be prepared with rice, flour or oatmeal instead. In Mexico, people love to enjoy their atole with tamales for breakfast, dinner or at any time. It warms millions of Mexican hearts during the holidays too. Atole is usually sold as street food.

 

Ingredients

  • 4 cups – low-fat chocolate milk
  • 1/2 cup – water
  • 4 tablespoons – cornstarch
  • pinch – salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon – cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon – vanilla

DIRECTIONS

Boil the low-fat chocolate milk in a saucepan over medium heat. Meanwhile, dissolve the cornstarch in water.

Add the cornstarch to the boiling chocolate milk and continue cooking until the mixture thickens, stirring constantly.

Add cinnamon and vanilla and serve immediately.
